Always wanted to dissect a powerful movie but felt uncertain how to do so? Come and find out how Jungians understand movies! We’ll watch Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction and then analyse the content and structure of the movie.
The film happens in a series of seemingly out-of-sequence scenes, very much as in a dream. We construct the story, the narrative, in our own imagination to render the film into a meaningful tale. We do this because we all need to make sense of our experiences, including the experience of watching a movie.
The film is unique in the clarity with which it demonstrates not only the structure, but the psychodynamics of the psyche. We are able to see how the
psyche transforms through the film. The central character, a low-level heroin-addicted enforcer for a criminal gang, is aided by a bible-(mis)quoting psychopath. As in all Tarantino movies, the spectre of violence is never far off, yet seldom graphically shown. We fill in the aftermath of violence in our own imagination, as we co-construct the narrative of the film.
Once we have worked our way through the parallel between Jung’s ideas of archetypes, complexes and symbols, and the film, we’ll have new ideas to use in seeing other movies from a completely different perspective.
